Winter fishing on Flaming Gorge Reservoir

The northern, Wyoming end of Flaming Gorge usually freezes in winter and is fished through the ice for lake trout, burbot and rainbows. Burbot are most active at night and in the darkest part of winter. The deeper southern canyon in Utah often stays open longer or does not freeze at all. Ice on a big reservoir varies a lot with wind and inflow, so check current ice reports before walking out. Utah and Wyoming each have their own licences and rules for their part of the reservoir.

Seasons, closed sections and permits are set by the state and change. Check the current regulations before a winter trip, and never trust shelf ice or a forecast for your safety.
