Species and season on Lough Corrib
The great mayfly hatch in late May and early June is the headline event for wild brown trout, preceded by duckfly and sedge hatches through spring and followed by evening fishing in summer. Pike fish well from autumn to spring around the island and bay structure, and perch and bream share the shallower water.
How to fish it
Trout fishing here is classic boat-based wet-fly drifting, and wind is everything: a moderate breeze gives the right drift and the right hatch. Lough Corrib's lower lake is shallow and strewn with rocks, so a guide or ghillie is strongly recommended for visitors rather than learning the water by trial and error.
Access, licences and local rules
Ireland has no general state rod licence for brown trout or coarse fish, but salmon and sea trout need a licence, and fishery owners and angling clubs control access to many shores and islands. Inland Fisheries Ireland is the regulating body. Boat hire and guiding are widely available from villages along the shore, and life jackets are the sensible default on a lake this exposed.
